Too many dialog boxes to
Solved
2013-12-18 5:28 pm
First off, great work. Thanks for a nice program. I'm using it to unlearn Dvorak and go back to Qwerty.
My suggestion is to get rid of the dialog boxes that popup when trying to exit a lesson early.
The "do you really want is exit" box presumes a level of importance that a single typing lesson doesn't have; i.e. it's not a big deal if someone accidentally clicks exit and loses a lesson. If someone tried is close a 20 page term paper without saving, they would expect a confirmation, but not for a 3 minute typing lesson.
Another solution, instead of getting rid of the dialog, would be to add a "remember my selection" checkbox to the dialog.
These comments also apply to the next "do you want to save your results" dialog. I think that dialog is less useful than the first.

An additional comment of the developer:
You are right, but we think it's important to decide if the results should be saved or not when you cancel the training. Already in our online version we combined the two dialogs to one dialog, only asking if you want to save the results - but with three buttons: Cancel, Yes, No.
We will adopt this dialog to the next software release.
And we will think about your suggestion, to add a "remember my selection" checkbox.
Thank you again,

middle fingers for 4 and 9
Solved
2013-10-05 9:51 am
Good morning,
I'm curious about your choice to teach typists to use their middle fingers for "4" and "9" instead of the more standard ring finger. Why was this decision made? Can there be an option to turn it off and have it the other way? I'm brushing up on my typing after many years, and find myself quite confused by this.
Much thanks,
-Dainius

Thank you for your request.
We know about that issue: There is not someting like "the only one" finger assignment.
In Germany we mostly use the method which we have in our software. We know that particularly in the U.S. touch typing is teached the way you are used to.
We will adopt it as an training option to one of the next software releases.

Importing big short stories
Solved
2013-09-07 11:19 pm
Sometimes the limits (400 lines only) is such a pain, I try to find stories that fits within the 400 lines limits.
I want to import all sorts of stories, to practice typing through stories, to get used to the format of the stories, dialogues, etc. It's a good way to absorbs the osmosis of writing naturally, freely, without worrying about anything.
This 400 lines limit is an annoying obstacle for a would-be writer training to be a REAL writer.
I would appreciates some way to remove this limit, thanks.
Already, I typed a couple of short stories that fits within the 400 lines limit and it was gratifying, but there are other short stories that are longer than the 400 lines limit.
When I try to import those longer texts, and I edited a little bit, click "save" and a dialogue box would pops up saying...
"Tipp10"
"Cannot analyse the lesson.
SQL statement failed.
(Error number 312)
This process will be aborted.
OK"
So there it is, I tried again with different short stories that are longer as well, edit a bit, then it happens again.
Oh well.
Hopes this 400 lines limits can be removed.
I have tested other touch typers and they're no good. Your Tipp10 are the best I've seen, and I liked it's ONE feature, IMPORTING text files so I can type over them, it's great. Great for my hands, I feel the benefits already.
Please, please, please?
Oh well.

Option to skip the space character while typing. Why? Data entry practice does not require you to enter a space while typing. However most practice lessons look like
4556 4556 5545 5545 .... enter key
Skipping of the space character is essential for this type of lesson practice.

Allow one-minute timings
Solved
2013-06-27 12:12 am
Hello,
I sent a suggestion a few days ago and never got a reply, so in case you didn't get I am sending it again. I suggested that it would be a good idea to allow one-minute timings. Currently, the lowest setting allowed in the program is two minutes for the duration of a lesson. A lot of fluency building exercises for other learning tasks that I've done and taught are often done in one minute timings. One-minute timings are a great way to start building concentration and quick dexterity. (Why is there a 2 minute minimum?)
Sam Miller
PS: Thanks for the great free program. I am really enjoying creating my own lessons.

Make Typing Text Window Scalable
Solved

Allow the name of custom lessons to be changed
Solved

Currently, once you save a custom lesson, you can not change it's name. I suggest changing that so that all the perimeters of each custom lesson, including its name, can be later changed as needed. In my case, after completing a few of my own custom lessons, I wanted to go back and change the naming format but wasn't able to.
Thanks,

Hi Sam,
Thanks again for your suggestion. You're right, in our software version it is not yet possible to change the name of the lesson. That's because the structure of our database was not very good. We made that much better in our online version, so there it is already possible to change the name. Our next software version will have the same database as our online version, so it will be possible to change names of lessons in the next version. I think we publish the next software version in the next months.

Add the obtion to export and import multiple lessons at once (batch export/import)
Solved
2013-06-15 6:38 pm
Hello,
First off, thanks for creating and freely sharing such a great typing software. I am currently creating custom typing lessons for a student I am working with. I would like to share my custom lessons with others and be able to move them from one computer to another easily. Currently, Tipp10 only provides very basic exporting and importing options. The following improvements are essential to being able to quickly and easily share groups of lessons with others and move custom content to new computers:
1) The option of exporting and importing multiple lessons at once. Currently, I have export and import one lesson at a time.
2) In the exported "txt" file, include more of the perimeters of the lesson rather than just the name and the lesson content. Currently the "Short Description" and the selected "Dictate the text as" option are not saved. That means if I want to share or move the lessons to a different computer, I have to go through each lesson individually and add back in the other perimeters missing in the imported lessons.
Thanks again,
Sam

Hi Sam,
Thank you very much for your suggestions. Let me answer your questions:
1) You're right - exporting multiple lessons would be a nice feature. We will think about that for upcoming versions.
2) In our software version it is not yet possible to export the "entire" lesson with all additional parameters. But we will change that with the next version (it's already implemented, but not published yet). Our online version already has this feature.

'Dead key' problem on Dvorak
Solved
2013-04-08 7:19 pm
Hello!
I am really enjoying Tipp10!
Gut gemacht!
The problem I discovered affects the Windows, Linux (ubuntu), and online versions of Tipp10.
I use an International version of the Dvorak keyboard which requires "dead keys" to type accented letters, like ç, ü, é, á, ó, í, œ, etc. Because of this, Tipp10 cannot recognize the ' or the " keys. My solution is to temporarily switch to a layout that doesn't use dead keys. However, because other typing tutors I've used, like kTouch, Klavaro, Type Faster, Stamina, etc. don't seem to have this problem, perhaps your programming team might be able to accommodate this some day.
Granted, the percentage of people using "dead key" layouts is probably very small. So it may not be a priority for you. But I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask.
Vielen Dank!

Tipp 10 for iPad

Are you working on an iPad edition of Tipp 10?
It's by far the best typing tutor available for Mac and Windows.
The typing programs at Apple's App Store are rubbish, and only cater for the onscreen touch keyboard – Tipp would be a great addition: well worth paying for.

Thank you very much for your message. At the moment, we don't plan a Tipp10 app for iOS. BUT our online version of Tipp10 also works for iPad. It's available in German language since July 2012 and we will publish the English version very soon. It's already fully translated but there are a lot of small corrections we are still waiting for.
But if you like you can already register for free here:
https://www.tipp10.com/en/online/
With iPad it's necessary to push an extra button before you can start the training. It's to select the input field and, if there is no external keyboard, to show the touchpad keyboard. You will notice the button in the left bottom corner of the training window. Also, on iPad Tipp10 Online is working best with an external keyboard. With touchpad keyboard you have to zoom a little bit at the beginning to see the whole training window.

Thank you so much for this. I've just tried the program online, and it's just as good as the download version.
I've been using Tipp 10 for over about 18 months, and my typing has really improved. I practice a little most days.
The ability to create your own lessons is fantastic: I've imported a list of pangrams, which really gives the typing a workout.
I've just purchased an iPad with wireless keyboard. The keyboard needs a little getting used to, so the online version of Tipp 10 will be great here.
Think I ought to make a little donation.
Thanks

An open format of lessons
Solved
2012-09-28 4:09 am
Hello,
First, thanks for the software, it's very good. I've practically learned touch typing in English with it, as the length of this message indicates.
Now, I was thinking of adding Russian lessons to it to learn touch typing in Russian. As a programmer (kind of), I wouldn't have much difficulty with making up a bunch of texts composed of letters that are in the same positions as in corresponding English lessons.
But I've found no lesson files of any human-decipherable format in the program files or source.
I see in the answers to other suggestions that you are planning to implement a way for users to customize the lessons. So, if I may, I'd like to suggest that the format of the lessons be something more open to human intervention, for example XML with custom markup or something like that. This alone would allow to roll a language course quite easily. And it would be easier yet if the program stored the lessons in runtime files (not in the source) so it wouldn't be necessary to recompile it. The same applies to the keyboard layouts.
Of course, I may be missing something and the creation of lessons requires more than that.
And another suggestion I'd like to add is that the program would probably benefit from the community if it were hosted on Github. It would make it easier for others to help with development. Of course, that means that people would ask about the file formats, development plans and things like that. But I think this is healthy for the open source ecosystem and it would be useful to roll out the incomplete next version for developers to play with it.
Sorry if my uncalled-for advices annoy you. Keep up the good work, anyway. I hope that I may one day advertise the program to the russian community.

Option to Only see Typing Text in progress
Solved
2012-09-25 12:30 am
Would it be possible to have the option of only seeing the typing text? I know nearly everything can be turned off - except the Errors, CPM, Time and Chars.
I have ADD and seeing them is wildly distracting. I have noticed after many tests that if I place the window at the bottom of the screen (hiding the above stated data) I consistently score 20 points higher.
Thank you so much for making such an awesome program.

Thank you very much for your interesting question and sorry for the delay.
In earlier versions we turned the status bar completely off but then users complained they want to see the values but not the finger description.
I think you are right and we have to offer two options - one to display the description and one to disable the entire status bar. We are working on the next software version and we will probably consider this topic.

word count please, not character count solved and in progress
Solved
2012-09-07 7:27 pm
please incorporate word count instead of the useless character count. the industry metric for typing is 'word count' not characters.
the implementation for this is pretty trivial - record the typing time between spaces and average it.

We will implement this feature in our next software version. The online version (which is available in German and will be available in English in 1 or 2 weeks) already has this feature (you can select between W(ords)pm, C(characters)pm, S(trokes)pm).

Document that on 64-bit Ubuntu one needs to install ia32-libs package in progress
Solved
2012-08-26 6:49 pm
Possibly on other Linux distros too, I had to install ia32-libs package on my 64 bit Ubuntu 12.04 to get the installation to work.
Either provide a separate download for 64-bit linux, or at least document it on the downloads age that one needs this package for tipp10 to work on 64 bit linux.
This suggestion applies to both, the .deb package and to the binary download too.
My first impressions of the software: "impressive". Keep up the good work.

PS: I wish to publish my name and email address, as opposed to hide it as suggested in the boxes below.
PPS: Waiting anxiously for the online version.

Thank you for your message and the notice regarding to the Linux distros. We will include your information in the manual within the next software version.
As you requested I added your email address to your bug report (you wrote your name already at the end).
If you are interested in the online version, you can already access it. To register simply go to the German website (www.tipp10.com/de/), then choose "Onlineversion". After that you can switch again to the English version (select "English" in the top right corner). Then you can register.
But you have to know that we are still translating the content - so especially in the results, a lot of phrases are not translated yet.

How to press the Alt Gr key
Solved
2012-08-18 12:34 pm
I noticed that the software teaches to press the Alt Gr key with the right ring finger. I noticed that it is not really comfortable doing it that way. I find that it is more logic to use the right thumb, which is actually closer to the key and which is usually free (because you also have the other thumb to press the space bar). I don't know if you can change it, because maybe the 10 finger system is copyrighted (sorry for my bad english), but I just wanted to know what you think about it.
2013-04-08 2:52 pm
Thank you very much for your message. And sorry for the delay.
I think you are right, using the thumb for some keys would be better and faster. The problem is, I think there is no general "copyright", but the software is used by a lot of schools. And I think everywhere you can read that the thumb is only used for the space bar. So we could change it, but I think we would then get a lot of feedback from schools.
So feel free to use your own "system" - we can also recommend alternative keyboard layouts like NEO or Dvorak (also supported by Tipp10), where all keys are completely reordered to give you the possibility to write very fast and comfortable. If you are interested, you will find a lot of information about it on Wikipedia:

Default display font in progress
Solved
2012-03-29 11:49 am
First of all, I absolutely love the program. The one tiny change I would make would be to change the default font in the dictation window from a sans-serif to a serif one because the current one can cause a few 'unforced errors'. An example is in lesson 6, which deals with capitalization, where it is impossible to tell whether it reads 'Al' (as in a diminutive from Albert) or 'AI' (as in Artificial Intelligence).
I know the problem can be easily solved via the preferences window, but it may still be worth correcting.
Thanks again for a great tool!

Thank you for your post! You are right, the font can confuse in some cases. In the character list of the results we already saw this problem and changed the font, but until now I didn't noticed we have the same problem in the ticker of the training window of course.
At the moment we completely renew the software caused by our new online version (which is in beta status now), because we want improve a lot of things and also both versions (software and online) should have the same features, databases, manual and so on. So I will think about changing the font in the new versions. The only thing which bothers me is that changing the font will not look very nice... but that's not really a reason to discard your proposal :)

Localization in Dutch? Uebersetzung in Holländisch?
Solved
2012-02-24 11:16 pm
I'd like to offer my services to translate the program into the Dutch language.
I've got a kid of ten who loves the program, but doesn't understand all of the texts.
I am native Dutch, I speak and understand German and am fluently in English.
I can translate from both German into Dutch as well as from English into Dutch.
I'd love to hear from you!
